Planters Fun Facts
1906: Amedeo Obici and longtime friend Mario Peruzzi form the Planters Peanut Company, renting two floors of a factory building in Wilkes-Barre. They chose the name Planters because they thought it sounded dignified.
1916: Mr. Peanut is born in Suffolk, VA, when 14-year-old Suffolk resident Anthony Gentile wins a Planters -sponsored mascot contest. An artist at the J. Walter Thompson advertising agency polishes up the rough drawing. The artist adds the monocle, top hat and cane.
2013: The "Power of the Peanut" campaign launches to highlight the nutritional value of peanuts: a serving of peanuts contains 7g of protein and is a good source of 6 essential nutrients. The campaign, starring Mr. Peanut, includes television and print advertising, online videos, and the relaunch of the NUTmobile on a national tour visiting stores and special events.
