McCormick Spice 12 oz. Gumbo File
Gumbo File is ground sassafras leaves.
The Choctaw Indians of Louisiana were the first to use sassafras leaves, dried and ground, to season and thicken Cajun and Creole soups and stews.
Gumbo File' has a flavor similar to thyme and savory.
It has a characteristic citrus flavor.
The tree is aromatic with yellow-green flowers and dark blue fruits with red stalks.
It has bright green leaves with three different shapes, all appearing on the same tree.
The benefit of spices, herbs, and blended seasonings is in their contribution to the flavor and appeal of foods and not in their nutritional content.
Though all spices and herbs contain some nutrients, the per-serving contribution of these nutrients in most cases is insignificant.
When using blended seasonings, be sure to check the label for salt or sugar which has been added to the blend.
Under ideal storage conditions, Gumbo File' will retain its flavor qualities and strength for up to one year.
